The Werk of Writing Novels
Words Brought To Life With An Author Community
For all of you who want to one day write the story of your life, you’ll need to know all the werk that’s required with writing a novel. I’m using the word ‘werk’ in place of ‘work’ to encourage you that writing is supposed to be a fun, laborious, emotional release. Yes! Just like sex.
For others to feel your emotions on paper, you have to put some love into how you write your words. Let meaningful words pour from your heart, through your veins, to the tips of your fingers and spill out expressions of oneself through blatant ink on the page. That’s my relationship with a pen and paper. How do you feel about writing? Lol. I understand if you don’t have the same relationship with writing, but if I were you, I’d start with a journal or diary. This even worked for Anne Frank, considering her circumstances. The words she put on paper are still full of emotion to this very day. Like sex, once you write your feelings on paper, they’re birth to life. The emotions don’t disappear from the words — ever. They exist now. They’re there for people to read.
I must admit, nowadays I don’t use paper and pen that much. My MacBook Air has remained on my lap for days, and thanks to new technology, I’m hand jamming my keyboard every day. My fingers moving like Speedy Gonzales. Yet, my emotions are still susceptible to attaching to the word document just the same.
I thought I could just be with words alone. At least, it seemed that I was weathering the storm alone. However, we need readers, editors, publishers and agents. Otherwise, it’s like being dropped off in Antarctica without a jacket. Every great writer needs a writer community. You need a street team to review your book once you publish it. You need an editor beforehand and you need a proofreader to double-check your editor. You need motivation too. Book coaches are good for that. Sticking through writing a complete book from start to finish isn’t easy, especially if you are busy with family and work.
Writing the novel or autobiography that you’ve always wanted to write is only have the battle. Once you write it, then what? Exactly. That’s why I thought I’d take the time to explain the entire picture. A book is like your baby. It’s something you created, and now you’ve got to help it gain visibility and grow a readership. Becoming an author isn’t for the faint of heart. It’s for the long term.
